Hancock County was founded in 1848 and was created by taking area from Brooke County. From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Hancock had a population of 28,834 people. This is a decrease of 6% since the last Census (which gave a population of 30,676 people in 2010). At the time of the 2010 Census, Hancock represented 1.66% of the total population of West Virginia.
