Gloucester County was founded in 1686 and was created by taking area from BurlingtonCounty.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Gloucester had a population of 289,920 people. This is an increase of 13.84% since the last Census (which gave a population of 254,673 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Gloucester represented 3.03% of the total population of New Jersey, making it the state's 14th most populous county (out of 21 counties).
