Lauderdale County was founded in 1833. Lauderdale was created by taking area from Rankin and Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Lauderdale had a population of 79,099 people. This is an increase of 1.2% since the last Census (which gave a population of 78,161 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Lauderdale represented 2.75% of the total population of Mississippi, making it the state's 6th most populous county (out of 82 counties).
