While we don't have a date for the founding of Welch, you might get a feel for it by knowing that during our research the earliest mention that we found (so far) was on a map dated 1911.

Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Welch had an population of 1,643 people. This is a decrease of 31.71% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 38.76% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Welch had a population of 2,406 people (or 10.88% of the total population of McDowell County). This makes Welch the county's most populous community.

The population of Welch represents 0.13% of the total population of West Virginia (which has 1,852,994 people), making it the state's 55th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 2,406 people, the population of Welch decreased 10.32% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 2,683 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Welch was on a map titled Map of West Virginia (from Rand McNally, 1911).
