Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Petersburg had an population of 2,635 people. This is an increase of 6.81% since the 2010 Census (or an increase of 8.75% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Petersburg had a population of 2,467 people (or 20.67% of the total population of Grant County). This makes Petersburg the county's most populous community.

The population of Petersburg represents 0.13% of the total population of West Virginia (which has 1,852,994 people), making it the state's 52nd most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 2,467 people, the population of Petersburg increased 1.82% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 2,423 people).
