Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Fairmont had an population of 18,403 people. This is a decrease of 1.61% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 3.63% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Fairmont had a population of 18,704 people (or 33.15% of the total population of Marion County). This makes Fairmont the county's most populous community.

The population of Fairmont represents 1.01% of the total population of West Virginia (which has 1,852,994 people), making it the state's 7th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 18,704 people, the population of Fairmont decreased 2.06% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 19,097 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Fairmont was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<8>

From that list, the Fairmont post office opened in 1843.
