Mineral County was founded in 1866 and was created by taking area from Hampshire County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Mineral had a population of 26,904 people. This is a decrease of 4.64% since the last Census (which gave a population of 28,212 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Mineral represented 1.52% of the total population of West Virginia.
