At the time of the 2010 Census, Buckhannon had a population of 5,639 people (or 23.25% of the total population of Upshur County). This makes Buckhannon the county's most populous community.

The population of Buckhannon represents 0.3% of the total population of West Virginia (which has 1,852,994 people), making it the state's 23rd most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 5,639 people, the population of Buckhannon decreased 1.5% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 5,725 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Buckhannon was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<8>

From that list, the Buckhannon post office opened in 1804.
