At the time of the 2010 Census, Sparta had a population of 9,522 people (or 21.31% of the total population of Monroe County). This makes Sparta the county's most populous community.

The population of Sparta represents 0.17% of the population of Wisconsin (which has 5,686,986 people), making it the state's 95th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 9,522 people, the population of Sparta increased 10.11% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 8,648 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Sparta was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<5>

From that list, the Sparta post office opened in 1852.
