The community of Balsam Lake is the Seat for Polk County.

Polk County was founded in 1853 and was created by taking area from Saint Croix County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Polk had a population of 43,705 people. This is a decrease of 1.13% since the last Census (which gave a population of 44,205 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Polk represented 0.78% of the total population of Wisconsin.
