Iron County was founded in 1893. Iron was created by taking area from Ashland and  Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Iron had a population of 5,688 people. This is a decrease of 3.85% since the last Census (which gave a population of 5,916 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Iron represented 0.1% of the total population of Wisconsin.
