The community of Mount Vernon is the Seat for Skagit County.

Skagit County was founded in 1883 and was created by taking area from Whatcom County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Skagit had a population of 129,181 people. This is an increase of 10.5% since the last Census (which gave a population of 116,901 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Skagit represented 1.74% of the total population of Washington.
