Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Montpelier had an population of 7,378 people. This is a decrease of 6.07% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 8.18% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Montpelier had a population of 7,855 people (or 13.19% of the total population of Washington County). This makes Montpelier the county's 3rd most populous community.

The population of Montpelier represents 1.26% of the population of Vermont (which has 625,741 people), making it the state's 16th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 7,855 people, the population of Montpelier decreased 2.24% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 8,035 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Montpelier was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Montpelier post office opened in 1798.

We also found Montpelier in the book titled U.S. Post Offices (Oct. 1846).
