The last Census shows that Richmond had a population<1> of 197,790 people in 2000. This represents 2.78% of the total population of Virginia, making it the state's 4th most populous community. The following is a list of similarily sized communities (based on the 2000 Census):
Every year, the US Census produces an estimate for the number of people living in Richmond. The most recent estimate is for the year 2007 and at that time, Richmond had a population of 200,123 people. This is an increase of 1.18% since the 2000 Census. The following table contains the yearly population estimates since the last Census (the next Census will be in 2010).
The city of Richmond had 92,282 Housing Units<3> at the time of the 2000 Census. The 2000 Census shows that Richmond has a total area of 62.5 square miles [162 km²]<4>. Of this total, 60.1 square miles [155.6 km²] of the area is land, with the balance (3.96%) being water (2.48 square miles [6.42 km²]). Using the above population and land area values, Richmond had a 2000 population density of 3,292 people per square mile [8,527 people/km²], making it the state's 12th most densely populated area.
