The town of Monterey is located in Highland County<1> and is the County Seat for Highland County.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Monterey, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1847.

When the people of Monterey refer to themselves (known as a demonym), they frequently use Montereyan<3>

From the  Census Estimates for 2019, Monterey has a population of 135 people<4> (see below for details).

Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Monterey had an population of 135 people. This is a decrease of 8.16% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 14.56% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Monterey had a population of 147 people (which is 6.33% of the total population of Highland County). This makes Monterey the county's most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 147 people, the population of Monterey decreased 6.96% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 158 people).

We originally found mention of Monterey in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Monterey was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Monterey post office opened in 1847.

We also found Monterey in the book titled Table of U.S. Post Offices in the United States (Jan. 1851).
