Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Marion had an population of 5,576 people. This is a decrease of 6.57% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 12.18% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Marion had a population of 5,968 people (or 18.53% of the total population of Smyth County). This makes Marion the county's most populous community.

The population of Marion represents 0.07% of the population of Virginia (which has 8,001,024 people), making it the state's 56th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 5,968 people, the population of Marion decreased 6% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 6,349 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Marion was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Marion post office opened in 1835.
