At the time of the 2010 Census, Herndon had a population of 23,292 people. This makes Herndon the county's most populous community.

The population of Herndon represents 0.29% of the population of Virginia (which has 8,001,024 people), making it the state's 24th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 23,292 people, the population of Herndon increased 7.56% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 21,655 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Herndon was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Herndon post office opened in 1858.

We also found Herndon in the book titled List of Post Offices in the United States (1870).
