Willacy County was founded in 1911. Willacy was created by taking area from Cameron and Hidalgo Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Willacy had a population of 21,280 people. This is a decrease of 3.86% since the last Census (which gave a population of 22,134 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Willacy represented 0.09% of the total population of Texas.
