The community of Carthage is the Seat for Panola County.

Panola County was founded in 1846. Panola was created by taking area from Harrison and Shelby Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Panola had a population of 23,103 people. This is a decrease of 2.91% since the last Census (which gave a population of 23,796 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Panola represented 0.09% of the total population of Texas.
