The community of Rusk is the Seat for Cherokee County.

Cherokee County was founded July 13, 1846 and was created by taking area from Nacogdoches County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Cherokee had a population of 52,561 people. This is an increase of 3.37% since the last Census (which gave a population of 50,845 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Cherokee represented 0.2% of the total population of Texas.
