Atascosa County was founded in 1856 and was created by taking area from Bexar County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Atascosa had a population of 51,140 people. This is an increase of 13.87% since the last Census (which gave a population of 44,911 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Atascosa represented 0.18% of the total population of Texas.
