Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Selmer had an population of 4,292 people. This is a decrease of 2.37% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 5.48% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Selmer had a population of 4,396 people (which is 16.86% of the total population of McNairy County). This makes Selmer the county's most populous community.

The population of Selmer represents 0.07% of the total population of Tennessee (which has 6,346,105 people), making it the state's 109th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 4,396 people, the population of Selmer decreased 3.19% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 4,541 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Selmer was in the book titled Business Atlas and Shippers' Guide (1895).

We also found Selmer mentioned on a train schedule titled Greyhound Bus Time Table (November 1931).
