Jefferson County was founded in 1792. Jefferson was created by taking area from Greene and Hawkins Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Jefferson had a population of 54,563 people. This is an increase of 6.14% since the last Census (which gave a population of 51,407 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Jefferson represented 0.81% of the total population of Tennessee.
