At the time of the 2010 Census, Cookeville had a population of 30,435 people (which is 42.08% of the total population of Putnam County). This makes Cookeville the county's most populous community.

The population of Cookeville represents 0.48% of the total population of Tennessee (which has 6,346,105 people), making it the state's 20th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 30,435 people, the population of Cookeville increased 27.22% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 23,923 people).
