Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Carthage had an population of 2,330 people. This is an increase of 1.04% since the 2010 Census (or an increase of 3.51% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Carthage had a population of 2,306 people (or 12.03% of the total population of Smith County). This makes Carthage the county's most populous community.

The population of Carthage represents 0.04% of the total population of Tennessee (which has 6,346,105 people), making it the state's 155th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 2,306 people, the population of Carthage increased 2.44% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 2,251 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Carthage was in the book titled U.S. Post Offices (Oct. 1846).
