The location of Whitewood has been provided by the Geographic Names Information System (ie- the GNIS).<2> While we don't have a date for the founding of Whitewood, you might get a feel for it by knowing that during our research the earliest mention that we found (so far) was in a book dated 1895. From the Census Estimates for 2019, Whitewood has a population of 982 people<3> (see below for details). Whitewood is 3,660 feet [1,116 m] above sea level.<4> In other words, the altitude of Whitewood is about ¾ mile [or ~1¼ km] above sea level. Time Zone: Whitewood lies in the Mountain Time Zone (MST/MDT) and observes daylight saving time Whitewood is within the (605) area code. Population Details ...Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Whitewood had an population of 982 people. This is an increase of 5.93% since the 2010 Census (or an increase of 16.35% since the 2000 Census). At the time of the 2010 Census, Whitewood had a population of 927 people. This makes Whitewood the county's 6th most populous community. The population of Whitewood represents 0.11% of the total population of South Dakota (which has 814,180 people), making it the state's 95th most populous community.
