The location of Whitewood has been provided by the Geographic Names Information System (ie- the GNIS).<2>


While we don't have a date for the founding of Whitewood, you might get a feel for it by knowing that during our research the earliest mention that we found (so far) was in a book dated 1895.

From the  Census Estimates for 2019, Whitewood has a population of 982 people<3> (see below for details).

Whitewood is 3,660 feet [1,116 m] above sea level.<4> In other words, the altitude of Whitewood is about ¾ mile [or ~1¼ km] above sea level.

Time Zone: Whitewood lies in the Mountain Time Zone (MST/MDT) and observes daylight saving time

Population Details ...

Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Whitewood had an population of 982 people. This is an increase of 5.93% since the 2010 Census (or an increase of 16.35% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Whitewood had a population of 927 people. This makes Whitewood the county's 6th most populous community.

The population of Whitewood represents 0.11% of the total population of South Dakota (which has 814,180 people), making it the state's 95th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 927 people, the population of Whitewood increased 9.83% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 844 people).
