Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Wagner had an population of 1,547 people. This is a decrease of 1.21% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 7.64% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Wagner had a population of 1,566 people (or 17.15% of the total population of Charles Mix County). This makes Wagner the county's most populous community.

The population of Wagner represents 0.19% of the total population of South Dakota (which has 814,180 people), making it the state's 63rd most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 1,566 people, the population of Wagner decreased 6.51% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 1,675 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Wagner was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<6>

From that list, the Wagner post office opened in 1896.
