While we don't have a date for the founding of Sturgis, you might get a feel for it by knowing that during our research the earliest mention that we found (so far) was in a book dated 1895.

Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Sturgis had an population of 6,976 people. This is an increase of 5.27% since the 2010 Census (or an increase of 8.29% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Sturgis had a population of 6,627 people (which is 26.06% of the total population of Meade County). This makes Sturgis the county's 2nd most populous community.

The population of Sturgis represents 0.81% of the population of South Dakota (which has 814,180 people), making it the state's 18th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 6,627 people, the population of Sturgis increased 2.87% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 6,442 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Sturgis was in the book titled Business Atlas and Shippers' Guide (1895).
