Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Murdo had an population of 444 people. This is a decrease of 9.02% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 27.45% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Murdo had a population of 488 people (or 48.51% of the total population of Jones County). This makes Murdo the county's most populous community.

The population of Murdo represents 0.06% of the total population of South Dakota (which has 814,180 people), making it the state's 156th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 488 people, the population of Murdo decreased 20.26% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 612 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Murdo was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Murdo post office opened in 1906.
