Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Mellette had an population of 215 people. This is an increase of 2.38% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 13.31% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Mellette had a population of 210 people. This makes Mellette the county's 2nd most populous community.

The population of Mellette represents 0.03% of the total population of South Dakota (which has 814,180 people), making it the state's 236th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 210 people, the population of Mellette decreased 15.32% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 248 people).
