At the time of the 2010 Census, Humboldt had a population of 589 people. This makes Humboldt the county's 10th most populous community.

The population of Humboldt represents 0.07% of the population of South Dakota (which has 814,180 people), making it the state's 140th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 589 people, the population of Humboldt increased 13.05% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 521 people).

We originally found mention of Humboldt in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Humboldt was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<6>

From that list, the Humboldt post office opened in 1889.

We also found Humboldt in the book titled Business Atlas and Shippers' Guide (1895).
