Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Herreid had an population of 416 people. This is a decrease of 5.02% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 13.69% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Herreid had a population of 438 people (which is 29.88% of the total population of Campbell County). This makes Herreid the county's most populous community.

The population of Herreid represents 0.05% of the population of South Dakota (which has 814,180 people), making it the state's 172nd most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 438 people, the population of Herreid decreased 9.13% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 482 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Herreid was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Herreid post office opened in 1901.

We also found Herreid on a map titled Rand McNally Map of South Dakota (1937).
