While we don't have a date for the founding of Hecla, you might get a feel for it by knowing that during our research the earliest mention that we found (so far) was in a book dated 1895.

From the  Census Estimates for 2019, Hecla has a population of 218 people<4> (see below for details).

Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Hecla had an population of 218 people. This is a decrease of 3.96% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 30.57% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Hecla had a population of 227 people. This makes Hecla the county's 4th most populous community.

The population of Hecla represents 0.03% of the total population of South Dakota (which has 814,180 people), making it the state's 231st most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 227 people, the population of Hecla decreased 27.71% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 314 people).
