The city of Eagle Butte is primarily located in Dewey County<1>. A portion of Eagle Butte extends into Ziebach County.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Eagle Butte, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1910.

From the  Census Estimates for 2019, Eagle Butte has a population of 1,472 people<3> (see below for details).

Eagle Butte is 2,410 feet [735 m] above sea level.<4> In other words, the elevation of Eagle Butte is about ½ mile above sea level.

Time Zone: Eagle Butte lies in the Mountain Time Zone (MST/MDT) and observes daylight saving time

Note: If you travel west from Eagle Butte (for example, toward Dupree), you will leave Mountain Time and cross into the Central Time Zone (CST/CDT).

Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Eagle Butte had an population of 1,472 people. This is an increase of 11.68% since the 2010 Census (or an increase of 137.8% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Eagle Butte had a population of 1,318 people (or 24.86% of the total population of Dewey County). This makes Eagle Butte the county's 2nd most populous community.

The population of Eagle Butte represents 0.16% of the total population of South Dakota (which has 814,180 people), making it the state's 70th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 1,318 people, the population of Eagle Butte increased 112.92% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 619 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Eagle Butte was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<6>

From that list, the Eagle Butte post office opened in 1910.

We also found Eagle Butte on a map titled Rand McNally Map of South Dakota (1937).
