The city of Deadwood is located in Lawrence County<1> and is the County Seat for Lawrence County.



While we don't have a date for the founding of Deadwood, you might get a feel for it by knowing that during our research the earliest mention that we found (so far) was in a book dated 1895.

From the  Census Estimates for 2019, Deadwood has a population of 1,296 people<2> (see below for details).

Deadwood is 4,520 feet [1,378 m] above sea level.<3> In other words, the altitude of Deadwood is about ¾ mile [or ~1½ km] above sea level.

Time Zone: Deadwood lies in the Mountain Time Zone (MST/MDT) and observes daylight saving time

Deadwood is within the boundaries of the (605) area code.

Population Details ...

Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Deadwood had an population of 1,296 people. This is an increase of 2.05% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 6.09% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Deadwood had a population of 1,270 people (which is 5.27% of the total population of Lawrence County). This makes Deadwood the county's 5th most populous community.

The population of Deadwood represents 0.16% of the population of South Dakota (which has 814,180 people), making it the state's 74th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 1,270 people, the population of Deadwood decreased 7.97% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 1,380 people).
