Miner County was founded in 1873 and was created by taking area from Hanson County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Miner had a population of 2,221 people. This is a decrease of 7.03% since the last Census (which gave a population of 2,389 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Miner represented 0.29% of the total population of South Dakota.
