The community of Plankinton is the Seat for Aurora County.

Aurora County was founded in 1881. Aurora was created by taking area from and  Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Aurora had a population of 2,749 people. This is an increase of 1.44% since the last Census (which gave a population of 2,710 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Aurora represented 0.33% of the total population of South Dakota.
