The population of Central City represents 0.02% of the total population of South Dakota (which has 814,180 people), making it the state's 279th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 134 people, the population of Central City decreased 10.07% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 149 people).

We originally found mention of Central City in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Central City was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Central City post office opened in 1877.

We also found Central City in the book titled Business Atlas and Shippers' Guide (1895).
