Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Brookings had an population of 24,682 people. This is an increase of 11.91% since the 2010 Census (or an increase of 33.39% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Brookings had a population of 22,056 people (or 69% of the total population of Brookings County). This makes Brookings the county's most populous community.

The population of Brookings represents 2.71% of the population of South Dakota (which has 814,180 people), making it the state's 4th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 22,056 people, the population of Brookings increased 19.2% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 18,504 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Brookings was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Brookings post office opened in 1879.
