At the time of the 2010 Census, Britton had a population of 1,241 people (which is 26.65% of the total population of Marshall County). This makes Britton the county's most populous community.

The population of Britton represents 0.15% of the population of South Dakota (which has 814,180 people), making it the state's 76th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 1,241 people, the population of Britton decreased 6.55% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 1,328 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Britton was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Britton post office opened in 1884.

We also found Britton in the book titled Business Atlas and Shippers' Guide (1895).
