At the time of the 2010 Census, Summerville had a population of 43,392 people (which is 31.78% of the total population of Dorchester County). This makes Summerville the county's most populous community.

The population of Summerville represents 0.94% of the population of South Carolina (which has 4,625,364 people), making it the state's 7th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 43,392 people, the population of Summerville increased 56.36% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 27,752 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Summerville was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Summerville post office opened in 1835.
