Oconee County was founded in 1868 and was created by taking area from Pickens County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Oconee had a population of 79,450 people. This is an increase of 6.97% since the last Census (which gave a population of 74,273 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Oconee represented 1.61% of the total population of South Carolina.
