The community of Saint George is the Seat for Dorchester County.

Dorchester County was founded in 1868. Dorchester was created by taking area from Berkeley and Colleton Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Dorchester had a population of 163,517 people. This is an increase of 19.74% since the last Census (which gave a population of 136,555 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Dorchester represented 2.95% of the total population of South Carolina.
