Barnwell County was founded in 1798 and was created by taking area from Orangeburg County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Barnwell had a population of 20,924 people. This is a decrease of 7.5% since the last Census (which gave a population of 22,621 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Barnwell represented 0.49% of the total population of South Carolina.
