At the time of the 2010 Census, Scranton had a population of 76,089 people (which is 35.48% of the total population of Lackawanna County). This makes Scranton the county's most populous community.

The population of Scranton represents 0.6% of the population of Pennsylvania (which has 12,702,379 people), making it the state's 6th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 76,089 people, the population of Scranton has remained roughly the same as the 2000 Census (with a count of 76,415 people).

We originally found mention of Scranton in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Scranton was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Scranton post office opened in 1851.

We also found Scranton in the book titled Business Atlas and Shippers' Guide (1895).
