Northumberland County was founded March 21, 1772. Northumberland was created by taking area from Lancaster, Cumberland, Berks, Bedford and Northampton Counties.

Using the Census estimates for 2008^<1>, Northumberland had a population of 91,091 people. This is a decrease of 3.58% since the 2000 Census, which gave a population of 94,473 people.

At the time of the 2000 Census, Northumberland represented 0.77% of the total population of Pennsylvania, making it the state's 32nd most populous county (out of 67 counties).
