Carbon County was founded March 13, 1843. Carbon was created by taking area from Northampton and Monroe Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Carbon had a population of 64,125 people. This is a decrease of 1.72% since the last Census (which gave a population of 65,249 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Carbon represented 0.51% of the total population of Pennsylvania.
