The town was incorporated in 1958.

The origin (or the toponymy) of Spray: Named after John F. and Mary E. Spray, earlier settlers in this area.

Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Spray had an population of 153 people. This is a decrease of 4.38% since the 2010 Census (or an increase of 9.29% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Spray had a population of 160 people (which is 11.1% of the total population of Wheeler County). This makes Spray the county's 2nd most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 160 people, the population of Spray increased 14.29% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 140 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Spray was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<8>

From that list, the Spray post office opened in 1900.
