The origin (or the toponymy) of Shaniko: Named after August Scherneckau (1838-1923), an early settler in this area.

We originally found mention of Shaniko in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Shaniko was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<8>

From that list, the Shaniko post office opened in 1900.

We also found Shaniko mentioned on a train schedule titled Union Pacific Railroad Time Tables (September 1924).
