The city of Tahlequah is located in Cherokee County<1> (at the time of its founding, Tahlequah was located in Indian Territory) and is the County Seat for Cherokee County.



While we don't have a date for the founding of Tahlequah, you might get a feel for it by knowing that during our research the earliest mention that we found (so far) was on a map dated 1911.

Population Details ...

Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Tahlequah had an population of 16,834 people. This is an increase of 6.86% since the 2010 Census (or an increase of 16.43% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Tahlequah had a population of 15,753 people (which is 33.53% of the total population of Cherokee County). This makes Tahlequah the county's most populous community.

The population of Tahlequah represents 0.42% of the population of Oklahoma (which has 3,751,351 people), making it the state's 33rd most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 15,753 people, the population of Tahlequah increased 8.96% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 14,458 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Tahlequah was on a map titled Map of Oklahoma (from Rand McNally, 1911).
